IPCR Departments


Department of Finance and Administration

The Department of Finance and Administration facilitates the effective and efficient operations of the activities of the Institute. The Department is responsible for the day-to-day administration and finances of the Institute and provides administrative support to the Institute’s various field projects. The Department, amongst other things is responsible for the general welfare of staff. It motivates staff by providing enabling and conducive working environment to enhance productivity.

The Department focuses on accountability, probity and transparency in the day-to-day administration of financial portfolio of the Institute in accordance with due process. Go Top



Department of Research and Policy Analysis

The main function of the Department of Research and Policy Analysis is to conduct research aimed at evolving appropriate methodologies for the investigation of conflicts through specific empirical studies. The research activities of the Department are targeted at the formulation of research models and strategies that would provide an in-depth understanding of conflicts in Africa.

The Department is also concerned with the study of Policy formulation and analysis, especially the relationship between policy issues, peace and conflict resolution. Go Top



Department of Defence and Security Studies

The Department researches into issues and trends in defense and security, especially in Africa. It studies armed conflicts, the phenomenon of inordinate military expenditures and African security, civilian-military relations, cross-border crimes within the continent, as well as international terrorism.

The Department focuses especially on the study and development of sub-regional security and collective defense arrangements in Africa, and on peacekeeping and peace-enforcement mechanisms. Go Top



Department of Internal Conflict Prevention and Resolution

In pursuit of the Institute's objectives, the Department organizes programmes to impart knowledge and skills in the areas of conflict prevention, management and resolution. It also seeks to build capacity in a range of negotiation techniques as well as promote the processes of peace-making, peace-keeping and confidence-building.

In this regard, the Department examines techniques involving power-sharing mechanisms, devolution of power and options open to post-conflict societies, e.g. federalism, autonomy, human rights protection and minority rights. Go Top



Department of External Conflict Prevention and Resolution

Crises are not always products of internally dictated dynamics; some times they are externally engineered, motivated and driven. The Department inquires into the forces and processes that could lead to cross-border export of crises or outbreak of hostilities between nation states.

Forces such as rebellion, self-determination movements and electoral disputes are studied with a view to arriving at policy options to contain, manage and resolve such disputes. Go Top



Department of Democracy and Development Studies

To avoid instability occasioned by struggles involving the transfer of power, it has become necessary to promote the culture of orderly and peaceful political succession, especially competitive elections, regarded as a cardinal feature of genuine democracy.

The Department conducts research and seeks to promote transparent, honest and credible electoral process. It adopts both proactive and reactive measures in researching and formulating strategies for the promotion of democracy, civil society, human rights, good governance, transparency and accountability, and human-centered development. Library Unit

The Institute has a multi-media library of over 10,000 books; including CD-ROMS, journals, newspapers/ magazines and government publications. Its core collections are in the areas of peace studies, conflict prevention management and resolution, international relations, international law and politics. The library’s Operations are fully automated using the X-Lib library automation package.

In addition to providing books, journals, and reference materials for research, it offers the following to its clients:

  • Internet browsing
  • Bibliographic services
  • Photocopying, Lamination, Spiral binding, Scanning
  • Access to back issues of 10 national newspapers (1997-Date)

Membership
The library is primarily established to provide research materials for the Institutes staff. However, its resources are accessible to members of the public whose research interest relates to peace studies and conflict management.

IPCR library maintains inter-library relationship with many libraries, both with-in and outside the federal capital territory.

The library is open 8am to 6pm week working days, (except on public days)

Audit Unit

Internal Audit is to ensure compliance with control measures established by management in the day to day running of the Institute. Go Top



Public Affairs Unit

The Public Affairs Unit under the supervision of the Director General serves as the image maker of the Institute. By so doing, the unit liaises with various media organizations, both local and foreign with a view to publicizing the activities of the Institute.

The Unit also liaises with non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders on peace for collaboration purposes. Most enquiries about the Institute and its activities are channeled through the unit. The unit serves as the Institute’s mirror as it usually the first contact with first comers to the Institute. Legal Unit

The legal unit offers legal advice to the institute and appears on its behalf in all litigations between the Institute and third parties. Preparation of legal documents in which the Institute is concerned or connect with, is being carried out by the Legal unit. Go Top



Computer Unit

The Computer Unit serves as the IT centre of the Institute. It provides technical services to users of computing equipment in the Institute to ensure the proper functioning of these items of equipment.

The Unit also designs customized application where necessary for use in the Institute as well as provides in-house training on IT to members of staff. Go Top
